Before the boardroom
A deliberately careful account. Public sources document only a handful of facts about Karsten Wildberger's early years — this page sets them out and marks where the record ends.
Gießen and the Lower Rhine
Verified factKarsten Wildberger was born on 5 September 1969 in Gießen, a university city in central Hesse. Both the federal government's cabinet CV and the ministry's official biography record this date and place.
His school years were spent on the Lower Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia. In June 2025 the regional newspaper Rheinische Post reported that the new minister had attended the Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium in Viersen-Dülken, where he passed his Abitur in 1989. German Wikipedia adds that he grew up in Viersen-Rahser; this detail rests on a single source.
The connection to North Rhine-Westphalia continued: when he joined the CDU in May 2025, he did so in his regional branch in that state.

Choosing physics
Verified factDirectly after his Abitur, Wildberger began studying physics at the Technical University of Munich in 1989, later continuing at RWTH Aachen. The choice set the course for the next decade: a Diplom in 1995 and a doctorate in 1997.
AnalysisThe record does not contain interviews in which he explains why he chose physics, so this archive does not attribute motives to him. What can be said is that the subject — and his later specialisation in computational modelling — gave him a quantitative toolkit that he subsequently carried into consulting, telecoms finance and technology management.
The late 1980s and early 1990s were also the period in which mobile telephony and the internet were moving from research labs into mass markets — the industries in which he would spend much of his career.
This archive does not publish private information about Karsten Wildberger's family. Official sources do not include it, and it is not relevant to his public role.
