Five years inside the energy transition
From April 2016 to July 2021 Karsten Wildberger sat on the Board of Management of E.ON SE, responsible for the part of the company that faces customers.
An industry being rebuilt
Industry contextWhen Wildberger joined E.ON in 2016, Germany's energy companies were in the middle of a structural break. Nuclear phase-out, rapidly growing wind and solar power and falling wholesale prices had undermined the old model of large central power stations. E.ON responded by spinning off its conventional generation and trading business as Uniper in 2016 and concentrating on energy networks, renewables and customer solutions.
In 2018 E.ON and RWE agreed an asset swap: E.ON took over innogy, including its networks and retail business, while RWE took over renewable generation. The EU Commission approved E.ON's takeover of innogy in September 2019. For E.ON's customer business, that meant absorbing millions of additional customers and their systems.
Verified factWildberger's announced role at appointment was Chief Markets Officer, with responsibility for innovation management, product development and the renewables business (IPP Journal, December 2015). Over time his portfolio was reported as covering sales and customer solutions, energy management, marketing, digital transformation and IT. Sources differ on his formal title, and this archive uses the neutral description “Member of the Board of Management”.

E.ON Home
A home-energy-management offer developed in collaboration with Microsoft, announced in October 2018, linking solar, storage and smart devices in the home.
E.ON Next (UK)
A new UK retail brand launched in 2020 on Kraken Technologies' customer platform — part of the restructuring of E.ON's UK customer business after the npower integration.
Research with RWTH Aachen
In 2021 E.ON and RWTH Aachen extended their cooperation around the E.ON Energy Research Center. Handelsblatt also reported on E.ON's experiments with quantum computing for energy management.
How his E.ON years were judged
When E.ON announced his departure on 10 May 2021, supervisory board chair Karl-Ludwig Kley — as reported by energy trade journal ZfK — said that Wildberger had brought experience from outside the energy sector, advanced the transformation towards customer focus, started the turnaround of the UK business, driven growth in decentralised energy infrastructure, made E.ON a market leader in smart-home energy solutions and digitalised the company.
His successor as board member for customer solutions was Patrick Lammers, previously CEO of Essent.
AnalysisCompany statements on departing executives are by nature positive, and the UK retail energy market went through a severe price crisis in 2021–2022, shortly after his departure. Independent quantitative assessments of his individual contribution are not available.
Verified factBeyond E.ON, he chaired the federal expert commission on energy policy of the CDU-affiliated Wirtschaftsrat during this period (archived Wirtschaftsrat page, 2021).
Where energy meets his current portfolio
He is not Germany's energy minister — that portfolio belongs to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. But his ministry touches energy at several points.
